What's in a framing takeoff

A lumber takeoff is only as good as the read of the plans behind it. I count framing the way a framing crew builds it: wall by wall, level by level, from your architectural and structural sheets.

• Studs, plates, blocking and backing by size and length
• Wall, floor and roof sheathing, with sheeted and unsheeted walls marked
• Headers, beams and posts from the schedules
• Every nail and connector: nails counted connection by connection from the nailing schedule (or the code's fastening table), plus hangers, straps, hold-downs and anchor bolts
• A numbered wall list and wall-number PDF, a framing code checklist, and a questions list for anything the plans don't say

Trusses come from your truss supplier, so truss counts aren't included. I note truss type and spacing.
